The objective was to introduce a mathematical approachthat incorporates locational values to solving the problem of Under-five Mortality Rate(U5MR). Data for this study was drawn from Nigerian Demographic and Health Survey for 2008.The Moran’s I Index, Z-score, P value equal 0.77,18.23 and 0.01 respectively. Also, theGetis and Ord statistic, Z-score, P value equal l 0.07, 3.09 and 0.01 respectively. The null hypothesis of randomness was therefore rejected. There was less than 1% likelihood that this clustering could be a result of random chance.Therefore, we conclude that the spatial pattern is clustered;as such there is strong spatial dependence across the study area. The clustered pattern indicates that U5MR at a particular location in the country have a strong influence on similar occurrences at contiguous locations. An increase in U5MR in a state could lead to increase in U5MR at neighboring states and vice versa across the country. The framework provides geo visual representations in addition to numerical facts to enable the orientation of child and health strategies targeted towards reducing U5MR and improving the health situation of children in the Nigeria. Thus, the proposed framework is more informative when compared to existing techniques, namely, time series analysis, comparative analysis, demographic techniques, univariate and multivariate analyses and principal component analysis.

Applications are given which show the power in a combination of existing exploratory
and statistical methods.
